I am not much of a writer myself, but I absoloutly loved this book. His commentry on each episode and the POV charectors are amazing. It stirs your mind. I have also read his Season two essays. I enjoyed it so much that I have purchased now the illustrated version and will now reread it now that I finished season two's. This volume, which contains numerous essays on the Game of Thrones television show (first season) is insightful, provocative and enjoyable, and will serve as a sound companion for novices and longtime fans alike. My main gripe, and it is a small one, is that the volume is sprinkled with inapt analogies to recent U.S. political history, reflecting the author's left-wing biases. I would prefer if the author, who is a foreigner, would draw from his own political culture, as his grasp of ours is a mile wide but an inch deep. Additionally, the author sometimes passes off as his own insights conclusions that are obvious to anyone who has read the novels. This is a cheap ploy that I hope will be avoided in future editions.
First I'd like to say that the content of the essays is interesting enough, but that's all it is..mildly interesting. Moore himself does say that superior essays can be found at various GoT sites online....for free, whether he really believes that superior essays exist is somewhat questionable. I wish I'd sought those sites out prior to purchasing this book. The author proclaims himself to be simple and ignorant, but those comments read like an attempt at false modesty during the recitation of some rather dull, but apparently remarkable, accomplishements in his personal life and his somewhat condescending remarks about average readers. He seems to suggest that it's not really possible for ordinary readers of fantasy to ever understand the layers of GoT.
He does have an intense love affair with GoT, and that's a good thing if you're going to publish essays on the subject, but to elevate this one work of fiction (as much as I love it myself) to the point of proclaiming other best selling and well loved fantasy writers work to be 'pedestrian' in comparison is insulting to those authors, and, in my opinion, offensive to the readers of those 'other' works.
I'll continue to read essays on the GoT series because I enjoy the opinions and theories of other readers, but I won't pay money for any more of Pearson Moore's opinions. I'm off to find the free sites.
Ego trip for author. Opinions not info, not helpful. Author wants to see himself as impressive. Very verbose personal thoughts not at all a guide.
I thoroughly enjoyed these essays, they provide an excellent analysis of GoT Season One, highly recommended. The essays discussed aspects and themes I didn't even remotely consider when I was watching show, and my appreciation for the TV show increased dramatically as a result. Respect to the Author.
The author encourages the reader/viewer to form his or her own opinions but I appreciated the author's opinions on so many aspects of the story and its characters, as seen on TV. I had not read the books and the scope of the story at times felt overwhelming. Now that HBO is running the first season again, in advance of the second season, I really appreciate having this book of essays as a guide. Thank you, Mr. Moore!
It's a long time still before season 4 so I thought to give this a read.
It's interesting but there's nothing new and the author I think puts entirely too much emphasis on the dead direwolf scene. So much so I thought the collection of essays could have used some editing there's too much repetition in his thoughts on that scene and even the mentioning of Martin's inspiration for writing it.
It was a quick read though I was just hoping for something new and to be honest something a lot more in depth.
I truly enjoyed this dissection of the Game of Thrones series by Pearson Moore. Since those who are reading ahead are awaiting Book Six, and those who are watching the series are awaiting Season 2, Pearson's discussions are a fantastic way to satisfy your Game of Thrones obsession while you wait. While I didn't agree with all his insights, I found invaluable his discussions on the dire wolf pups, and on the kidnapping of Leana and it's hidden implications. I also thoroughly enjoyed his comparisons of the series to the books. Reading the discussions of how different writers handle the same scene is catnip to me, and I hope he will include more of these insights when the next season rolls around.
